Jacob Ulm will be joining the 2016 Bushwackers brass team as caption manager. Jacob has marching experience with the Cadets, having marched with the corps in 2010 and 2011, winning the DCI world championship that second year. In 2012, he was an instructor with the Connecticut Hurricanes, and in 2013 and 2014, he was an instructor with 7th Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps.
Jacob holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from James Madison University. He is currently a middle school band director in Piscataway, New Jersey. He recently moved with his family to the home state of the Bushwackers after being the band director of the Crimson Tide Marching Band at Everett High School in Massachusetts for the past two years.
Brass instructor Scott Brown is returning to the Bushwackers for the 2016 season. Scott was assistant brass caption head in 2004 through 2006, and in 2006 the corps won DCA’s coveted high brass award. Scott returned as brass caption head in 2011. Most recently, Scott has served as brass caption head for Fusion Drum & Bugle Corps.
Scott is a music teacher at Northwestern Lehigh Area High School and a freelance brass musician, an adjudicator for marching and jazz bands, a marching band music arranger, and a clinician for marching bands. Scott holds degrees in Music Education from Wilkes University and The American Band College, and has done post-graduate work at The University of the Arts and Villanova University.
Laurie Kunzle will serve as a brass instructor for the 35th anniversary year of the Bushwackers Drum Corps. Laurie has a long history with the corps, including the role of brass caption head from 1993 to 1995. Laurie joined the Bushwackers as a member in 1986 and was the drum major for the corps beginning in 1987. She conducted the corps through its three straight championship titles in 1988, 1989, and 1990.
Laurie holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from West Chester University and a master’s degree in conducting from Montclair State University. She is currently teaching instrumental music and band in New Jersey.
Returning to the Bushwackers for the 2016 season in the role of brass instructor will be Tyler Miller. Tyler is currently a music instructor and visual designer/instructor for the East Haven High School CO-OP Marching Band, and prior to his work there, Tyler has instructed some of the top high school marching ensembles in Connecticut.
Tyler is in his final year at The Hartt School of Music where he is pursuing a degree in music education and euphonium performance. He began his drum corps career as a member of the Connecticut Hurricanes, and he was a member of the Cadets for their 2011 DCI world championship season. He’s happy to return to his Bushwackers family for the 2016 season.
Michael Surkin is returning as brass instructor for the 2016 Bushwackers Drum Corps. Michael currently works with the Central Bucks High School East marching band. He marched five years with the Jersey Surf, and served as trumpet section leader and horn sergeant. Michael was a member of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps for his final year of marching with DCI.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Kutztown University.
